Why buy tickets? You can see Fairey’s graffiti for free, ruining urban surfaces everywhere. And if you really need to see the First Marxist president with his arrogant face, well you don’t need to pay for that either.

His work and success is a kick in the crotch for artists everywhere. Takes little known artists’ work. Repackages it. Reaps in many times more profit than the original artist and spends a fraction of the time doing it. Doesn’t even give credit. While the artists he copied were trying to pay the bills he’s drinking champaign and golfing at the country club. And if you try to rip off of his copy, he’ll sic his lawyers on your ass.

Shepard Fairey’s art has become ironic. The culture and society he has questioned, he has profited from. His success could only occur in a free, capitalist society where posters, t-shirts, skateboards, and advertisements could be bought and sold, for a high prices mind you. He is a very good, and smart businessman- don’t be fooled you anarchists. He dines at expensive restaurants, hangs out in galleries, and homes of the rich- who buy his art. And that is ok with me. In fact, that is the American dream.

But call it what it is- commercial art.

he is copying other peoples copies of copies.
What is original anymore?

think: warhol, soviet constructivism, 1960′s poster artists like Milton Glaser, and more

Is he a hack? Is he a designer/rebel who thinks he is an artist?

The fact that he calls himself an artist, makes him one. The fact that his art is shown, does, too.

The fact that we are discussing it makes it art, too.

So, maybe he is a hack and theif. But he is damned good at it and his isn’t the first.
